As an amateur, Conlan reached number one in the AIBA bantamweight world rankings, with achievements that include an Olympic bronze medal at London 12′ and a World Championship gold medal at Doha.
Michael Conlan left RIO 2016 with a bad taste in his mouth. The reigning World gold medalist lost a controversial decision in the bantamweight quarter-final to Russia’s Vladimir Nikitin. In most people’s eyes, he was robbed. He tore off his Ireland vest and held up his middle fingers to the judges..
